TCB Jeans' 1890 No. 2 Jeans are a carefully crafted homage to 19th-century workwear, drawing inspiration from the classic 201s of the era. These jeans are made from No.2 denim, characterised by irregular, long-slub yarns that create a rich, vertical fade. Unlike TCB’s XX Denim, No.2 denim has a slightly rougher texture, reflecting the original coarser cotton and uneven yarn shape used over 130 years ago. Dyed with real indigo before synthetic dyes were adopted, the jeans feature a 'thick white ear' selvedge with an intriguing asymmetrical twill direction on the left and right edges. This detail adds to the authentic look and feel, capturing the handmade quality of vintage denim.

Meticulous vintage-inspired touches include a Hartshorn buckle modeled after the original 1855 design, a single pocket with a faded printed message on the left front, and a folded single-needle stitch known as the 'rainbow stitch.' This two-colour stitching evolved naturally, likely from variations in sewing thread rather than by design, creating a subtle, timeworn look. Other period-specific details like a small crotch rivet placement, shallow overlap, and hand-stamped rivets make the 1890 No. 2 Jeans a true collector’s piece, combining authentic historical detail with rugged, timeless style.

What We Think

The 1890 No. 2 Jeans are among TCB's most considered and detailed productions. These mirror the exact vintage specifications of the denim worn in that era by miners, farmers, and various workwear vocations in the U.S. and beyond. Single-stitch construction, brace buttons, and white selvedge are just some of the thoughtful details. TCB has gone so precise, they've even included excess cotton on the seams of these jeans and the jacket, just as it would have appeared over 130 years ago—a feature we love!

Wearing the two 1890 pieces together would look amazing, but we also think they work really well as separates with a loopwheeled tee.
