A modern take on a traditional Japanese textile, the Sashiko Wide Tapered Pants from Japan Blue Jeans are cut from a custom 11oz indigo sashiko jacquard. Originally developed for firefighter uniforms during the Edo period, sashiko fabric is known for its textured strength - but here, it’s woven soft and light enough for daily wear.

What We Think

This custom sashiko-style fabric from Japan Blue Jeans is woven on dobby looms, which allow for intricate, repeating textures that resemble traditional sashiko stitching.

Indigo rope dyeing gives the warp threads a rich surface colour while leaving the core of each yarn undyed. Over time, this creates a beautiful fade pattern as the surface wears away, revealing lighter tones and enhancing the texture. It’s the same technique used on many Momotaro outerwear pieces, known for their characterful aging and tonal complexity. These pants will only get better the more you wear them!
